Emulsion is the paint you would use on your walls and ceilings. As well as the brand and colour of paint you will need to choose a sheen, which will dictate the finished effect. The options as far as emulsion is concerned, are:
Flat matt: this is the smoothest, most velvety option (as far from gloss as possible) which reflects the least light and so helps to hide imperfections on less-than-perfect walls. It also means the colour in any particular room remains relatively the same even when there is a change in light conditions. Flat matt works wonders with deeper shades too.
Matt: this is the next step towards gloss and is also a smooth, velvety paint which helps to hide imperfections on less-than-perfect walls for the same reason as above. Matt looks similar to paper. It suits all styles of room but works especially well if you are trying to achieve a classic or period look.
Eggshell: moving further towards a gloss finish, this finish looks like the surface of an eggshell (hence the name). It gives a beautiful classic look to woodwork and can also be used on walls if you are looking for a heritage-style look with a tough finish.
Silk: silk is a mid-sheen finish which reflects a little more light than eggshell and so appears like a slightly polished surface. You can easily wipe silk finishes, which means they are more practical, but it does show up any imperfections a bit more.
